As a defense attorney, you have to be a real expert at separating your feelings from your work. You are going to defense people all the time that you know committed a crime. You may defend people who you don't agree with or who you don't even like. 

If you want to succeed as a defense attorney, you have to be able to put aside your personal feelings, positive or negative, about a client aside. You need to be able to focus on filling a person's right to a fair trial and representation. 

This is a challenging skill and not one that all people have. It helps to have a desire to give people representation and a belief in the criminal justice system. 

Do Bond With the Client

Next, you are going to have more success as a defense attorney if you bond with the client. That may seem contradictory to the advice given above, that you need to not let your personal feelings get in the way of your work, but it is not.

You need to find that human part of each person that you work with that you can connect with. You need to make sure that your clients trust you and feel that they can be honest with you because their honesty and willingness to share information can make your job a lot easier.

Being able to bond with your client help you figure out how to get the judge or the jury to bond with the client to ensure that your client gets a fair trial or to ensure that they get fair treatment during their sentencing. 

Research the Jury Pool

Finally, you need to be skilled at researching the jury pool and understanding how the jury will respond to your client. You need to be aware of the stereotypes and prejudices that people carry around with them. Being more aware of how different people will react and respond to your client, their situation, and the charges that they face will help you choose a jury pool that will treat your client fair, under the law, like they are supposed to do. 

If you want to be a great defense attorney, you need to not let your personal feelings get in the way of doing your job. You should bond with your client; this will allow you to get the best information possible from them. You should research the jury pool and pay close attention to the jury's reaction during the trail.
